Yellow Ostrich Chosen As The Latest eMusic Selects Artist

NEW YORK, NY (March 1, 2011) — Today eMusic is announcing the newest addition to the eMusic Selects family: Yellow Ostrich. The band is essentially the brainchild of one man, Alex Schaaf from Wisconsin. His debut album, The Mistress, is a new bedroom pop classic that channels Grizzly Bear and Neutral Milk Hotel, and it is only available on eMusic.

“We proudly welcome Yellow Ostrich to the eMusic Selects family. eMusic continues to the home of forward-thinking, independent artists. I am thrilled that we are able to spotlight up-and-coming bands like Yellow Ostrich,” said eMusic Editor-in-Chief, J. Edward Keyes.

“The focal point of the songs on Yellow Ostrich’s magnificent debut album The Mistress is Alex Schaaf’s tender, pleading voice. It’s a reedy, childlike instrument. It’s looped and layered, stretched, manipulated. It’s stacked and used as an instrument to flesh out the empty spaces in his bare, searchi ng songs. We feel this album is a bona fide masterpiece,” said Keyes.

In conjunction with the album release, the eMusic.com editors have published an exclusive eMusic Selects Q&A with Alex Schaaf. In the interview, Schaaf talks about his inspiration behind his fragile songs, the beginnings of Yellow Ostrich, and how Yellow Ostrich has become a three-piece, rounded out by Mistress collaborator, drummer Michael Tapper (Bishop Allen, Fool’s Gold, We Are Scientists), and multi-instrumentalist Jon Natchez (Beirut).

eMusic Selects is a program that eMusic started in 2008 to spotlight talented, unsigned bands.  The program has served as a launching pad for some of today’s buzziest indie bands: Best Coast, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Crystal Stilts and Julianna Barwick all released some of their first albums through our eMusic Selects program.
